Established in 2007, the Department of Economics at Shangpung College has a rich history, initially beginning with three faculty members. Since the inception of Shangpung College in 2007, the Department of Economics has been one of its founding departments. Over the years, it has served hundreds of students by offering both pass and honors courses, ensuring a strong academic foundation in the field.
Lecturer. Embhah Wet, the first Head of the Department, followed by his successors, including Lecture. Chika Shadap, Lecturer. Wompher Suting have contributed significantly to the department's growth. Currently, Assistant Prof. Tobias R Dkhar leads the department, which has evolved to meet the academic needs of the community and the state.
The department offers general and major courses at the undergraduate level across Arts. While student intake has seen fluctuations, the cut-off for major admissions typically stands at 45%. Despite varying socio-economic backgrounds, student performance remains satisfactory, reflecting the dedication of the faculty.
The Department of Economics at Shangpung College is a well-knit community of accomplished and highly committed teaching faculty and a very vibrant group of student body. The Department in its continual endeavour towards harmonizing excellence with inclusivity and equity draws strength from a dynamic teaching- learning process, where the faculty feels privileged to collaborate with its enthusiastic young scholars as they embark on an enriching and fulfilling life-long learning experience. The Department’s continuous emphasis on the understanding of the principles of Economics within a multidisciplinary framework has been a great motivator to its students to pursue their dreams and aspirations infused with a people-centric approach.
The Economics undergraduate programme provides a strong foundation in economic theory and quantitative tools of economic analysis. The department currently has four undergraduate teachers specializing in various fields, including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Economics Development, Mathematics for Economist, Statistics for Economist, Environmental Economics, and International Trade and others. All the teachers are sincere, hardworking and dedicated. There is complete trust and faith among the faculty members. There is also close co-operation and co-ordination in the discharge of any duty or responsibility. Any difficulty or problem that arises is solved through discussion and consensus. There is a lot of teamwork and sharing of responsibilities and duties. All these qualities and attributes have helped the department to improve its performance over the years especially in terms of students’ performance which is indeed very satisfactory.
